The Brief

To reconfigure the existing home to create a more open, connected and functional interior, with a considered parents retreat, improved bathroom planning and a stronger relationship between the living and entertaining spaces. The design was to work largely within the existing footprint while introducing custom joinery, improved circulation, new lighting and a cohesive material palette.

The Concept

The concept rethinks the existing fragmented layout to create more, connected and functional spaces. The original layout was divided into a series of smaller, disconnected spaces, arranged independently around a bedroom.

By removing the dividing walls, the living areas were opened to create a more generous and connected sequence of spaces with improved circulation and greater flexibility for furniture and entertaining. The former bathroom and study areas were reconfigured to create a defined bedroom suite, with a new ensuite and larger custom walk-in robe. Access to the laundry was incorporated behind concealed custom joinery. An internal satin-glass window allows for natural light to penetrate into the walk in robe while maintaining privacy.

Glazed, handmade Spanish tiles in olive and white, custom joinery in Laminex Natural Sublime Teak veneer, and 100% wool carpet bring a sense of softness and calm to the retreat. Juxtaposed to the rough texture of the dry stone wall. A nod to the homes beautiful rugged setting at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
